Internet, Wi-Fi and LAN Speed Tests
gHOST Scout combines Internet speed testing and LAN read/write testing with its network tools for Mac and Windows. Use the right test for the connection you want to check: Internet access and local network transfers measure different things.
Internet speed testing
An Internet speed test measures transfer performance between your computer and a remote test service. Download and upload results reflect the whole path, including your connection, router, provider and the remote service. They are not a measurement of your Wi-Fi radio alone.
Testing an Internet connection over Wi-Fi
Run the Internet test while connected through Wi-Fi. Keep the location and test conditions consistent, and pause other large transfers. If possible, compare with Ethernet on the same network. A difference can help identify where to investigate, but a single result cannot isolate the cause.
LAN read and write performance
A LAN test checks transfers within your local network. gHOST Scout includes LAN read and write testing. These results can be limited by the storage and endpoint involved as well as the network, so they should not be treated as the speed of a cable or switch alone.
Link speed is not throughput
A negotiated Ethernet or Wi-Fi link rate is different from the transfer rate a test achieves. Protocol overhead, competing traffic and endpoint performance all affect usable throughput. Compare results in the same units: Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Start by checking which devices are online. Run an Internet test, then a LAN test when local transfers are slow. Repeat under similar conditions and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet where available. Use ping monitoring to observe reachability alongside the throughput results.
